Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has reunited with his family, marking an end to a period of estrangement that followed a significant financial dispute and legal action. The NFL star sued his father's company, Camwood Capital Management Group, in 2024, alleging breach of contract and claiming that between 2018 and 2021, the company improperly transferred $12 million from the Mayfield family accounts without their knowledge.
According to the lawsuit, 'substantial sums of money belonging to Baker and Emily Mayfield' were moved to businesses connected to his father, James, who is listed as founder of Camwood, and his brother, Matt, who serves as managing director. The lawsuit stated that the Mayfields were 'unable to account for, or obtain information about, the current location and/or status of those funds.'
In April 2025, Mayfield and his wife, Emily, visited relatives in Texas with their then-one-year-old daughter, Kova. Mayfield told the Tampa Bay Times that he has reconnected with his family in recent months, describing the experience as positive, especially for his parents to meet their grandchildren. The couple welcomed a son, Maverick, earlier this year.
"What's in the past is in the past," Mayfield said. "(My wife) Emily and I took (daughter Kova) down right around her first birthday... it was the first time they met her, and you (could) tell it just melted them."
Following the initial lawsuit, the Mayfields reportedly reached a confidential settlement with Camwood Capital Management Group, with the expectation of recouping the approximately $12 million, plus interest. However, a subsequent lawsuit was filed, asserting that the terms of the settlement agreement had not been met. This filing claimed that 'Camwood Capital has not repaid even one dollar under the Settlement Agreement,' leading to legal action for breach of contract.
Despite the legal complexities, the family is now focusing on reconciliation. Mayfield expressed his belief in forgiveness, stating, "You can't put yourself on a pedestal and act like I haven't made mistakes in my life. I had the ability to forgive and that was what I wanted to get across." He added, "But we're here and the door is open. The past few months, we have made good progress and began reconnecting."
