Baker Chases Down Thief Who Stole Cakes
A baker caught a thief on camera stealing from her cake shed and pursued them, successfully retrieving the stolen goods.
A baker in Clay Cross, Derbyshire, successfully retrieved stolen goods after chasing down a thief who had taken cakes from her honesty shed. Jade Walton, owner of JD Bakes, spotted the theft on security footage on October 19. The man, whose face was obscured by his coat, took a lemon drizzle cake, a raspberry ripple cake, and a chocolate brownie, totaling £9.80.
Walton, 33, immediately pursued the individual, who she later confronted on the high street. Video footage captured Walton running after the thief and demanding the return of the stolen items. During the confrontation, the thief initially handed back only one cake while apologizing, but eventually returned the remaining two after being pressed for taking multiple items. Walton warned the individual not to return.
Walton stated that the shed is equipped with 24-hour recording. She was in the bakery preparing cookie dough when she saw the live preview of the theft. Describing the experience, she said, "Adrenaline took over." She added that although she is not a confrontational person, she felt compelled to act to protect her business. She noted that this was the third theft from her business since July.
Walton opened JD Bakes in 2017 and expressed her appreciation for the majority of her honest customers, emphasizing that the actions of a few should not tarnish the experience for many. She also called for solidarity among business owners facing similar issues.
Derbyshire Police confirmed that the incident has been reported and that inquiries, including the review of footage, are underway. No arrests have been made at this time.
