Bake Off Viewers Criticize 'Gimmicky' New Format
Fans express frustration with 'audience week' and 'chaotic' changes in the latest Great British Bake Off episode.
The Great British Bake Off faced criticism from viewers for a new "audience week" format introduced during Tuesday's episode, which saw contestants joined by relatives and given unprecedented freedom in challenges. The revamped approach led to Shannon becoming the second baker to be eliminated from the series.
The episode featured a signature challenge where bakers' family members joined them in the tent to assist with creating a basque cheesecake. This was followed by a technical challenge that allowed each baker to create anything they could recall from memory, a departure from the show's tradition of having all contestants attempt the same bake.
Many viewers took to social media, with many on X (formerly Twitter), to describe the new theme as "gimmicky" and "chaotic," citing the increased chatter and confusion from having numerous people in the baking tent. Some questioned how the technical challenge could be fairly judged when participants were producing entirely different items. Comments included suggestions that the ideas for "audience week" came from individuals who do not regularly watch the show and that such a change to a 16-year-old staple was unnecessary.
Despite the mixed reactions, the signature challenge proved successful for Moyin, who, with his mother's help, received the first "Hollywood handshake" of the series for his cheesecake. Clara was ultimately named star baker for the week.
The showstopper challenge tasked contestants with creating a "wearable bake," resulting in creations such as hats, bags, and a wig inspired by Dolly Parton. While judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith were impressed by Clara's handbag bake, Shannon's biscuit showstopper was deemed not ambitious enough to save her from elimination.
