The Great British Bake Off featured a throwback moment during its recent dessert week when contestant Yannis announced he would be using a recipe from former judge Mary Berry. Berry, who co-hosted the show with Paul Hollywood on the BBC from 2010 to 2016, left when the program moved to Channel 4. Her departure led to the inclusion of Prue Leith, who has since been joined by Nigella Lawson.

Yannis's decision to employ Berry's sticky toffee pudding recipe did not, however, secure his place in the competition. He was eliminated in the fourth week, becoming the latest baker to leave the tent. His efforts in dessert week, which included a black forest gateau, trifle, and the sticky toffee pudding, reportedly fell short of the judges' expectations. Earlier challenges also proved difficult for Yannis, with his signature self-saucing puddings failing to impress and his technical bread and butter pudding being described as having 'overwhelmed' flavors.

Connie was named Star Baker for the week, notably earning a handshake from Hollywood.

The mention of Mary Berry's recipe ignited a strong reaction from viewers on social media. Many took to Twitter to comment on the perceived displeasure of Paul Hollywood, suggesting he was 'fuming' that a contestant chose Berry's recipe over his or Lawson's. Comments included observations such as "Using Mary Berry's recipe and Paul is furious. Hahaha! In your face Paul," and "Paul is fuming he’s using Mary Berry’s recipe."

This dessert week followed a challenging bread week, where a technical challenge involving flatbreads with a grape and blue cheese filling resulted in widespread disappointment. Judges Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson found most of the bakes to be undercooked. Hollywood described it as "Probably the worst technical I think I have ever seen in 17 years." Lawson lightheartedly suggested that the contestants should eat their own creations as a punishment for the poor results, a sentiment that resonated with viewers who joked about the judges perhaps opting for a meal elsewhere afterwards.
