Badenoch Vows to Prevent Separatists from 'Ripping the UK Apart'

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has declared that her party will prevent separatist movements in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland from dismantling the United Kingdom.

Badenoch made these remarks in her opening address at the Conservative conference in Birmingham, asserting that her Shadow Cabinet is committed to thwarting any such attempts.

"We are the only party that consistently stands up for the Union," stated Alex Burghart, the Conservative deputy leader and Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary. "Labour won’t do it – they are the architects of ‘devolve and forget.’ We are the only party that will not let the separatists off the hook, that will expose their failures on education, on health, on business, on crime, on everything."

Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay echoed these sentiments, warning against complacency regarding the threat to the Union. He emphasized his commitment to "keep fighting for Scotland" and to oppose "divisive nationalism."

Findlay criticized Scottish First Minister John Swinney for his collaboration with Sinn Fein and Plaid Cymru during a recent summit in Wales. He described Swinney's decision to align with Sinn Fein as "irresponsible" and a bid to "destroy the United Kingdom."

Badenoch highlighted the perceived failures of devolved administrations. "Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have been run by people who want to rip the United Kingdom apart and my team will not let them," she stated.

Shadow Scottish Secretary Harriet Cross also pointed to shortcomings in devolved areas. "Point to me one thing which the SNP has done well and I struggle to find one," Cross said. "They use independence as the safety blanket, they know they can use that to pull it over people’s eyes and distract from what they are actually doing."

Findlay further argued that the SNP's persistent focus on independence is "dangerously irresponsible" in the current global climate, which he believes poses significant threats from nations like China, Russia, and Iran. He contended that these regimes desire a divided United Kingdom, a goal he asserts is shared by some SNP politicians who oppose Britain's armed forces and advocate for the closure of Faslane, the UK's naval base for its nuclear-armed submarines.

In response, SNP MSP Alex Kerr dismissed Findlay's concerns. "Nothing will strengthen Scotland’s standing in the world more than becoming an independent country and rejoining the international community in our own right for the first time in over 300 years," Kerr stated. He also noted that Findlay's party had experienced its "worst ever Scottish Parliament election result" while the SNP secured a fifth term in government with a pledge for an independence referendum.
