Badenoch Accuses Burnham of 'Russia's Dirty Work' Over Brexit Vote Claims
Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch clashed with Andy Burnham at Prime Minister's Questions, accusing him of reopening Brexit divisions and doing Russia's bidding.
Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch accused Andy Burnham of "Russia's dirty work" on Wednesday, asserting that his comments about potential interference in the 2016 Brexit referendum were damaging and divisive.
The exchange occurred at Prime Minister's Questions, stemming from Prime Minister's recent remarks on a podcast suggesting he was told Vladimir Putin meddled in the 2016 vote upon arriving in Downing Street. Burnham had stated in the podcast that he had received a "clear answer" that Russian interference occurred.
Badenoch challenged Burnham, asking, "Does he ever get tired of putting his foot in his mouth?" She further accused him of attempting to "unsay that Russia influenced the 2016 referendum, when we all heard him say it." She suggested the Prime Minister either intentionally sought to undermine the referendum or spoke carelessly on a national security matter.
Burnham, in response, defended his position, stating, "It is a matter of fact that hostile actors have been seeking to interfere in our democratic process." He criticized the opposing party for not confronting this issue directly, recalling that Badenoch herself had previously stated she had "not read the Russia report." Burnham pledged to "draw a line" and defend democracy with "positivity, unity, and hope."
This political clash followed an intervention by MI5 Director General Sir Ken McCallum, who acknowledged that Russian media and trolls had attempted to influence the Brexit vote. However, he cautioned against dwelling on the issue, suggesting it could "play into our adversaries' hands" by amplifying the impact of Russian interference and dividing the public.
"It is kind of up to us how far we allow our adversaries to divide us," Sir Ken said. He expressed concern that continued debate could make Russian trolls appear more significant than their actual impact on the vote.
Sources indicate that reports from 2019 and open-source intelligence confirm that Russian state media, including Russia Today and Sputnik, as well as online trolls, were active around the time of the referendum.
