Babysitter Faces Death Penalty in Pennsylvania for Infant Murder
Nicole Virzi, a PhD student, is accused of killing a six-and-a-half-week-old infant and injuring his twin while babysitting.
Nicole Virzi, a 32-year-old PhD student, is scheduled to return to court in Pennsylvania as prosecutors seek the death penalty in connection with the alleged murder of a six-and-a-half-week-old infant. Virzi is accused of killing Leon Katz and injuring his twin brother, Ari, while she was babysitting them at the family's Pittsburgh home in June 2024.
Prosecutors allege that Virzi inflicted a skull fracture and several brain bleeds on Leon. Her attorneys had requested a postponement of her trial, originally scheduled for earlier this month, to allow for additional preparation time to build her defense against the possibility of capital punishment. A new trial date has not yet been set, but a motions/status date is scheduled for October 28, according to the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office.
Virzi, the daughter of a prominent New York City cardiologist, was nearing completion of her PhD in clinical psychology at UC San Diego when she was arrested. Police footage captured Virzi confessing to investigators that she repeatedly dropped Leon on his head until she heard a "crack" because she was furious about having to babysit. She stated, "Something just came over me I couldn't control." In the police interview, Virzi admitted to having "this urge - almost like a compulsion I can't control - to hurt kids" since a very young age.
Her defense attorneys have argued that her confession was coerced during a 13-hour interrogation, but a judge has ruled that prosecutors may use it as evidence at trial. Virzi and the infants' mother, Savannah Roberts, met while working as research coordinators in the graduate psychology department at Drexel University in Philadelphia. Virzi was visiting Roberts and her partner, Ethan Katz, for a week in June 2024.
According to court filings, on June 15, 2024, Virzi reported a bloody injury on Ari's groin and was tasked with watching Leon while the parents took Ari to the hospital. Virzi told police that she was getting a bottle for Leon when she heard screaming and, upon returning, claimed the baby had fallen from his bouncer chair. She subsequently called 911.
Leon was pronounced dead hours later from a severe skull fracture and multiple brain bleeds. An autopsy report determined the injuries were consistent with child abuse and inflicted blunt force trauma, not accidental. A doctor told investigators that the injuries to both twins were "consistent with having been sustained as a result of child abuse, as these are inflicted injuries that are not natural and not accidental."
Virzi, who was staying at an Airbnb, was arrested the following morning. During an interrogation lasting over 11 hours, she initially denied involvement but eventually admitted to becoming angry about the "nanny work." She told lead detective Janine Triolo in a videotaped confession, "Something about that built up a lot of anger in me. So when I was alone with (Leon) I shook him a couple times - hard. And I dropped him a couple times - hard." She added, "I heard some kind of crack" and admitted to flipping the baby on the bathroom floor. She also stated, "I did not want him to die. That was not my goal. I just wanted him to feel a little pain."
Virzi is currently being held without bail at the Allegheny County Jail.
