Baby Dies After Pony Kick in Rural Minnesota

A baby girl has died from injuries sustained when a pony kicked her in the head in rural Minnesota. The incident occurred on Tuesday when the seven-month-old was in a wagon being pulled by a pony that became startled, according to the Fillmore County Sheriff's Office.

The Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner’s Office identified the infant as Ruth Stutzman. She was born on March 1, 2027.

Deputies were dispatched to the girl’s home north of Harmony, in southeastern Minnesota, at 1:56 p.m. Tuesday. First responders, including Harmony Ambulance, the Harmony Fire Department, and Preston police, arrived at the scene. Initial investigations revealed that an adult family member was with the baby at the time of the incident.

The infant was transported by Mayo 1 air ambulance to Mayo Clinic Hospital-Saint Marys, where she later died from her injuries. The Fillmore County Sheriff's Office and the Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner’s Office are continuing to investigate the incident.

This incident follows another recent event involving a horse-drawn vehicle in Minnesota. On October 2, a truck collided with a horse-drawn buggy in Becker County. Two 23-year-old adults, an infant, and a toddler who were inside the buggy sustained injuries in that accident, which remains under investigation by the Becker County Sheriff’s Office.
