Baby Critically Injured, Mother Dead After Bronx Balcony Fall

An 8-month-old baby girl is in critical condition after falling 15 stories from a Bronx balcony, an incident that resulted in the death of her mother and is being investigated as a homicide.
The infant, Angel Novalty Carrasco-Ramirez, miraculously survived the fall that killed her mother, 23-year-old Nathaly Ramirez, on Tuesday. The baby was initially taken to Jacobi Hospital and has since been transferred to Cohen Children’s Medical Center in Queens.
A hospital insider described the infant's condition as "not doing well," with medical staff "keeping their fingers crossed."
Ramirez's ex-boyfriend and Angel Novalty's father, 31-year-old Angel Carrasco, was arrested Wednesday by U.S. Marshals and NYPD officers. He faces murder and attempted murder charges. Carrasco was taken to Jacobi Hospital for a medical evaluation following the incident. His arraignment is pending.
Mourners gathered for a vigil on Saturday outside the apartment building where Ramirez and her infant daughter allegedly fell. Approximately 200 people attended the ceremony, which featured purple and white balloons, heart-shaped candles, and was organized by We All Really Matter (WARM), a group that assists with funeral costs for domestic violence victims.
Attendees chanted "Justice for Nathaly" and "Long live Nathaly." Ramirez’s mother, who identified herself as Nathaly, thanked attendees and spoke about her daughter's compassion for mistreated individuals.
"She loved honestly," the elder Nathaly said. "She hugged with a tenderness that only had peace."
Among the displays at the vigil were photos of other domestic violence victims, including Lovay Williams, who was found dead in her Manhattan apartment on September 6. Tiliek Shamel Thompson, 41, has been charged with murder, strangulation, assault, and child abandonment in connection with Williams' death and has pleaded not guilty.
Brianna Rios, a survivor of domestic violence who had previously been comforted by Ramirez, spoke at the vigil. Rios recounted Ramirez's struggles with Carrasco, stating that police had been called to Ramirez's home over five times. Rios also mentioned that Carrasco had been arrested twice previously, once for assault and another time for breaking and entering into Ramirez's home.
"Not only was he able to get next to her again, he was able to kill her," Rios said, highlighting the perceived failures in protective measures.
Rios called for systemic change to better protect families, children, and women from domestic violence.
