Baby Among Bystanders Injured in Bronx Daylight Shooting
A 1-year-old girl sustained minor injuries from shattered glass after a shooting in the Bronx wounded a man, police reported.
A daylight shooting in the Bronx on Monday afternoon left two bystanders injured, including a 1-year-old girl who sustained minor wounds from shattered glass. The gunfire erupted around 4 p.m. on Courtlandt Avenue in the Melrose neighborhood.
A 32-year-old man was shot in the ankle, according to the New York Police Department. A bullet fragment also struck a parked 2023 Honda Civic, causing its window to shatter. The 1-year-old girl, a relative of the 16-year-old girl who was driving, was injured by the glass fragments.
Emergency medical services transported both victims to Lincoln Hospital, where they are reported to be in stable condition. Sources indicate that neither of the injured bystanders was the intended target of the shooting.
Surveillance footage captured the moments leading up to the incident, showing a figure in dark clothing approach the Honda Civic before appearing to fire a weapon across the street. The shooter then fled the scene. In the video's closing moments, a man is seen exiting a nearby building to check on the occupants of the Honda before escorting them inside.
Residents described the event as startling for the typically quiet neighborhood and time of day. "It’s a dangerous situation in a relatively quiet area in a relatively quiet time of the day," said resident Just Moore, who was with his infant child when the shooting occurred. Another local, David Valentin, recounted hearing eight to ten gunshots, calling the broad daylight incident "crazy."
Law enforcement officials stated that the occupants of the Honda and the man who was shot did not know each other. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
