Newborns arriving in the United States between July 2 and December 31, 2026, will receive a special, limited-edition Social Security card. The commemorative cards will feature a patriotic design and the official Freedom 250 logo, marking the nation's 250th anniversary.

These special cards will be automatically issued to babies born during this six-month period who are registered through the Social Security Administration's (SSA) Enumeration at Birth program. Parents will not need to complete any additional paperwork to receive the keepsake document.

The design of the card is a one-time change for the celebratory period. The Social Security card's legal standing and functionality will remain the same as the standard version, and there will be no additional cost to parents or taxpayers. SSA Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano stated that "Freedom 250 is a celebration of America’s storied history and the monumental moments that have shaped our nation, including the creation of Social Security over 90 years ago."

Babies born outside the July 2 to December 31, 2026, window, or individuals requesting a replacement card, will receive the standard Social Security card. The SSA also issued a warning to parents about potential scams, emphasizing that the agency will not contact individuals by phone, text, or email to request payment for these commemorative cards.

In addition to the special newborn cards, the SSA has announced its July payment schedule for Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries. Most beneficiaries receive payments based on their birth date, while SSI recipients are scheduled for July 1. August SSI benefits will be disbursed on July 31, as August 1 falls on a Saturday.

The agency continues to encourage the use of electronic payments and has phased out nearly all paper checks, citing concerns about mailed checks being lost, stolen, or delayed.

Separately, The Senior Citizens League has projected a potential 3.9% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for Social Security benefits in 2027, though the official COLA announcement is expected in October.
