Autopsy: Cause and Manner of Death for Nolan Wells Undetermined

The Mississippi State Medical Examiner's office has determined that the cause and manner of death for 18-year-old Nolan Wells are "undetermined," according to the autopsy report released on Wednesday. This finding aligns with the preliminary conclusions of an independent autopsy commissioned by Wells' family, which also cited a lack of conclusive evidence pending further investigation.

Wells died after a July 4th boat trip with friends to Horn Island. His body was recovered two days later, on July 6. At the time of the recovery, authorities suspected drowning, but Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter stated that investigators were diligently working to determine the exact circumstances of his death. Ledbetter also indicated that there were no initial signs of foul play and welcomed the family's independent investigation.

The circumstances surrounding Wells' disappearance and death gained national attention. His mother, Christine Wonsley, expressed her grief and confusion in July, stating, "The only question we have is, what happened to our son?"

Wells, a college football player, was reportedly left behind on Horn Island after his friends departed the location. The sheriff's department released a photo of Wells during the search efforts.
