Menands, N.Y. police are continuing their search for a 7-year-old nonverbal autistic boy who disappeared from a family gathering on Sunday afternoon. Harbe Nagi was last seen at approximately 4:10 p.m. during a graduation celebration in Menands, a village located just north of Albany.
Nagi, who does not reside in the area and primarily speaks Arabic, remains missing as of Monday night. The boy is the nephew of Hamtramck, Michigan Mayor Adam Alharbi, who has traveled to New York to be with his family. Alharbi has appealed to the public for assistance and is offering a $10,000 reward for his nephew's safe return.
The child is described as 3-foot-7 and weighing approximately 48 pounds. Authorities noted that Nagi has a tendency to wander and explore, with a particular interest in water. He also enjoys the outdoors, climbing, and music, with a fondness for the song “Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star.”
To aid in the search, authorities have placed ice cream trucks in the vicinity where Nagi was last seen, hoping the familiar sounds might draw him out. Nagi was last seen wearing a light-colored shirt and dark pants, and was not wearing shoes. He has brown eyes and brown hair.
Mayor Alharbi, who is the brother of Nagi’s mother, stated that the child had attempted to leave the house previously, but his mother had been able to retrieve him. Nagi was reportedly with his mother at the party when he walked away. The family relocated to Albany from New York City a few years ago, and Nagi was born in the U.S.
Community members from Menands and surrounding towns have joined the search efforts. Police are urging the public to remain observant, check their surveillance cameras, and look for signs of the boy on easily climbable structures. They do not currently suspect foul play but are investigating all possibilities with assistance from the New York State Police, the Albany County Sheriff’s Office, and the FBI’s Albany Office.
Anyone who encounters Nagi is advised to call 911 and approach him gently, speaking softly, as he may become overwhelmed. The family has asked for the public to keep the boy in their thoughts during the ongoing search.
