A journalist has detailed her successful journey of losing half a stone while adhering to nutritionist Emma Bardwell's 30G Plan, a regimen she found sustainable and non-restrictive, even amidst personal challenges.

Patricia Nicol, who has a history of yo-yo dieting, found that the 30G Plan allowed her to maintain energy levels and continue with her exercise routine. The plan's core principles involve aiming for approximately 30 grams of protein per meal to support muscle building, consuming 30 grams of fiber daily for digestive health and blood sugar balance, and eating at least 30 different plants weekly to promote gut biome diversity.

Nicol noted that the variety of plant-based foods, including cupboard staples like nuts, spices, and canned beans, made meeting the 30-plant goal achievable. This approach, she found, differed from more restrictive diets that often eliminate or demonize certain foods. Bardwell's plan allows for flexibility, incorporating foods like bread, pasta, and rice, which are valued for their fiber content. The nutritionist also permits moderate consumption of processed foods such as pre-cooked rice pouches and encourages grilled options when dining out.

Despite a period of significant personal stress, including a family health crisis and extensive travel, Nicol was able to adapt the 30G Plan to her circumstances. She found that the emphasis on protein and fiber provided enough energy to maintain her daily activity, which included averaging 10,000 steps and engaging in strength training. She also noted that the plan did not lead to the feeling of hunger or deprivation she had experienced with previous diets.

While Nicol initially struggled to lose weight, attributing it partly to her height and not adjusting portion sizes sufficiently, she eventually achieved a loss of half a stone by making minor adjustments to her intake. She found that reducing certain high-calorie additions to meals, such as syrup or coconut oil in parfaits, and slightly decreasing grain portions helped to initiate weight loss.

Nicol plans to continue incorporating the principles of the 30G Plan into her lifestyle, even during a forthcoming holiday, appreciating its adaptability and focus on nurturing rather than restriction.
