Sybilla Hart, a mother of five, has detailed a series of alarming and sometimes comical incidents involving professional nannies and childminders over an eight-year period. Hart recounted these experiences, which ranged from a nanny stealing her designer clothes to one who abandoned children after an iron exploded, in an effort to explain why she has decided against hiring professional childcare.
One particularly memorable incident involved a long-term nanny who sent Hart a birthday photo of herself wearing Hart's own Ralph Lauren jeans and a silk top. Hart's mother-in-law had previously suggested checking the nanny's bag, a suggestion Hart had felt too embarrassed to act upon. Other childcare providers included a babysitter who eloped with the father-in-law's butler while on duty, and another who fled the house during a smoke-filled incident caused by an exploding iron, leaving sleeping children inside.
Hart also described a trained nanny who accidentally dropped a three-month-old baby in a bath, shut a toddler's head in a door, and another who threw a son's dummies at him in anger. Another childminder attempted to conceal a broken wedding vase by piecing it back together without glue, causing it to disintegrate upon touch.
Elite Nannies and Unrealistic Expectations
Hart's first choice for childcare was a trainee from a prestigious Norland Nanny school, known for educating nannies for royal and affluent families. However, this candidate opted for another family who offered gluten-free cupcakes, weekend use of a Porsche, and a personally decorated flat. This particular nanny also insisted on sole charge of Hart's three children, despite Hart being at home to breastfeed her newborn.
Another attempt involved a 17-year-old au pair who experienced severe homesickness, crying throughout a two-week holiday. Despite efforts to cheer her up, including cooking dinners and watching television, the au pair ultimately flew back to Eastern Europe.
Hart also encountered a temporary nanny who struggled with basic tasks, such as cutting a carrot with a blunt knife. While this nanny did bake banana bread, her lack of domestic skills proved a challenge.
Questionable Staffing Agencies and Unconventional Solutions
Exploring other avenues, Hart considered using a high-end staffing agency that charged £3,000. A pre-hiring investigation revealed the agency's suggested candidate had posted compromising photos on Facebook. The agency reportedly dismissed Hart's vetting process as peculiar.
Even after moving to rural Essex, childcare issues persisted. During one outing, children reported that their babysitter was inattentive when their youngest sibling fell and was injured. The older children, deeming the sitter unsafe, moved themselves and their younger sibling to a climbing frame in the garden, where the parents later found them asleep upon their return.
After approximately eight years of negative experiences, Hart largely gave up on professional nannies. She found a reliable sitter named Lynn, who, despite moving further away, was exceptionally capable. More recently, Hart has found success with individuals in non-traditional childcare roles. One such individual, Pam, who works in demolition, managed effectively during a power outage, retrieved escaped dogs, and ensured the children were asleep, all while having prior paramedic training which helped manage a child's nosebleed.
These experiences have led Hart to conclude that she was previously looking for childcare in the wrong places, questioning how she and her husband were able to leave the house for any reason over the past decade. Some names in the account have been changed.
