Political analyst Anand Giridharadas is set to release a companion YouTube investigative series on September 8, preceding the September 29 publication of his new book, "Man in the Mirror," which examines the 2023 New York City subway chokehold case involving Jordan Neely and Daniel Penny. Knopf, an imprint of Penguin Random House, will publish the book.
The documentary series, which Giridharadas will host alongside The New York Times' Emma Goldberg, delves into Neely's death and Penny's subsequent acquittal on manslaughter charges in 2024. Each episode is designed to open with a piece of evidence, such as interrogation tapes or death certificates. This approach marks a departure for Knopf, a prominent publishing house that typically maintains exclusive publishing windows rather than releasing multimedia content on the same subject concurrently with a book.
The series was developed through Collective Media's Next Gen News accelerator program, which supports journalists in areas such as production, distribution, and audience growth on YouTube. Giridharadas has spent two and a half years researching the case, which became a significant point of division and discussion in a polarized society.
Giridharadas is a best-selling author known for works such as "Winners Take All," "The True American," and "India Calling." He previously worked as a foreign correspondent and columnist for The New York Times and maintains a widely read political newsletter on Substack.
"Man in the Mirror: Hope, Struggle, and Belonging in an American City" will be released one week after Ari Emanuel's memoir, "Roll the Calls."
