Author Jane Green, 58, has described how leaving a challenging 18-year marriage and embracing her authentic self has led to a perceived reversal of her aging process. Green recounted feeling invisible and deeply unhappy during the final years of her marriage, a period she felt aged her significantly. The experience, she said, was exacerbated by financial stress and a growing resentment within the relationship.
The Marriage and Its Demise
Green detailed how the marriage began to change during the COVID-19 pandemic. Financial pressures mounted as she shouldered the sole financial burden while her husband pursued a master's degree. This disparity, coupled with his caregiving responsibilities for his ailing mother, led to increasing distance and resentment between them. Green described their life as a marriage of "ships that pass in the night," with limited communication and unmet needs on both sides. A recurring argument on New Year's Eve 2023 marked a rupture in their relationship, leading to their separation.
Personal Transformation
Following the separation, Green moved to Marrakech, Morocco, where she spent 18 months learning to become self-reliant. She initiated a process she terms "rewilding," which involved significant personal shifts. This included dyeing her hair back to its natural brunette color, which she felt made her look younger and more recognizable to herself. She also re-evaluated her sense of style, moving away from trends and embracing fashion that reflected her personal taste from the late 1960s and early 1970s, such as bell-bottom jeans and Afghan coats. This shift in self-expression, she stated, was for her own approval rather than external validation.
Green attributes her rejuvenated appearance and energy levels to internal changes, specifically happiness and self-acceptance, rather than significant alterations to her beauty routine. She underwent intensive therapy, which she credits with helping her become comfortable with herself and shed the insecurities that had previously defined her.
Redefining Aloneness
The author differentiated between loneliness and aloneness, describing her current state as "aloneness"—a quiet fullness derived from appreciating her own company, rather than the hollow ache of loneliness. This newfound comfort in her own skin has led to greater ease in social interactions and a broader acceptance of life's opportunities. Green noted that while she is open to future relationships, her current focus is on rebuilding her career and nurturing her relationship with herself. She believes that contentment and self-assurance are palpable to others, leading to more open interactions with strangers. Green concluded that by embracing her truest self and actively engaging with life, she feels she is "ageing backwards."
