Author Liz Jones has shared her experience of realizing her ex-husband's behavior during the 2006 World Cup was an indicator of an affair.

Jones recounted that she had purchased a flatscreen television and a new sofa specifically for her husband to watch every match of the tournament while she was working. She became confused when he began cheering for Germany, a team he had no prior apparent connection to.

"I couldn’t understand why my husband was suddenly supporting Germany," Jones wrote. She later learned that his interest in Germany stemmed from meeting another woman, Daphne, while traveling in India on Jones's credit card. Daphne's parents, Jones noted, had a connection to her own father's history during World War II.

Football, Jones explained, became a complex element in their marriage. While at times it seemed to bring them closer, such as when she bought a TV for their bedroom so they could watch 'Football Italia' together, it also contributed to their eventual separation.

Jones reflected on her efforts to engage with her husband's interests, including driving him to Tottenham Hotspur matches and contacting club officials for better seats. She contrasted this with what she perceived as his lack of interest in her own passions, such as her horses or her travels to her husband's parents' birthplace in India.

"Why do men show no compunction to learn about our hobbies, our obsessions?" Jones questioned. "Why don’t these matter?"

She contrasted her own experiences during past World Cups, where she found inspiration in players' tenacity, with her marital situation. The author suggested that her husband's behavior during the World Cup served as a sign she recognized too late.

On their wedding day... Why did I travel many times to my husband’s parents’ birthplace, India, but he never showed the slightest interest in getting on a train to Chelmsford? writes Liz

I shared his passions... but when I showed him my passion, videos of my horses, all he said was, ‘Nice’
