Millions of Australians receiving Centrelink payments are slated for a financial boost beginning September 20, when a range of welfare payments will be adjusted upwards. These increases are part of the government's bi-annual indexation process, designed to ensure that welfare payments keep pace with inflation and the increasing cost of living.
Recipients of JobSeeker payments will be among those benefiting from the adjustment. The maximum fortnightly payment for a single individual without children will rise by $16.20 to $833.70. For those with dependent children, the payment will increase by $17.30 to $892.80 per fortnight.
ABSTUDY, a program providing financial assistance to eligible Indigenous students and apprentices, will also see a fortnightly increase of $16.20. Young Australians receiving Youth Allowance, which supports eligible individuals studying, training, or seeking work, will experience a 2 percent increase, amounting to an additional $20.90 per fortnight, bringing the total to $1,068.20.
Australians who receive Rent Assistance will also see an increase in their payments starting September 1. The maximum fortnightly payment for a single individual will rise by 2 percent, from $219.40 to $223.80.
Rent Assistance is available to eligible Centrelink recipients who pay rent, with the amount determined by individual circumstances and rental costs. Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek stated that this additional support will aid Australians on income support in managing expenses such as rent, food, and everyday bills, ensuring that those most in need can make ends meet and are not left behind.
