A Perth woman's New Year's Eve celebration in Bali ended with a stark financial lesson after a misunderstanding of currency and VIP pricing resulted in a $10,650 bar tab.

Hayley Davis was holidaying in Bali with friends when she secured a luxury daybed at Atlas Super Club in Kuta, where American rapper Swae Lee was performing. Believing the cost to be $1,650, Davis and her group indulged in drinks, food, and shishas throughout the night. Davis later described the experience as "literally living like the rich."

The reality of the expense didn't surface until three days later when Davis's card was declined while attempting to make a small purchase. Upon checking her bank account, she discovered a $10,650 charge from the super club.

Davis explained that she had initially tried to book the daybed through the club's website, but the transaction failed. A subsequent attempt to pay via a friend's account also encountered issues, leading Davis to call the club directly to complete the payment over the phone. She shared a receipt in a group chat, but no one noticed the discrepancy.

Early indicators of the escalating cost were overlooked. When the group was preparing to leave, a waitress attempted to communicate that a significant amount remained on their tab. Due to a language barrier, Davis misinterpreted the message and told the waitress to keep the remainder as a tip. The waitress then offered bottles of alcohol to compensate for the unused portion of the tab, which the group began giving away, unaware of their high value.

It wasn't until one of the bottles was identified as being worth $600 that Davis began to question the true cost of their spending. The full extent of the financial shock, however, was only realized when her card was declined days later.

Davis acknowledged that the mistake "could have been easily avoided" and that she was "literally traumatized" by the experience. Fortunately, her friends eventually contributed their shares of the bill, though an additional $700 in interest had accumulated by the time the funds were transferred. The incident has since drawn widespread commentary from viewers, many expressing disbelief and relating their own travel money concerns.
