A 19-year-old Australian tourist sustained critical injuries after being stabbed inside a McDonald's restaurant in Midtown Manhattan early Monday. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. at the Eighth Avenue eatery, law enforcement sources reported.

The victim was reportedly sitting and eating when he was attacked, sustaining stab wounds to the rib cage and back. Sources described the assault as largely unprovoked, despite an exchange of words between the tourist and his assailant.

The tourist, whose identity has not yet been released, was transported to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition. Authorities took a person of interest into custody following the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
