A married teacher in Australia has been sentenced to 15 months in jail for engaging in sexual offenses with two male students. Tayla Lee Brailey, 32, pleaded guilty to the charges and had previously lost her teaching position and her marriage.

Brailey was arrested in August 2024 after engaging in sexual activity with a 17-year-old student in her car. She returned to teaching shortly after the incident. Weeks later, she was arrested again when it was discovered she had also touched a 16-year-old student inappropriately in a classroom setting.

The younger victim reported that the encounter left him with lasting shame, causing him to withdraw from his peers and leave high school before completing his studies. He experienced sleep disturbances and flashbacks as a result of the abuse.

During sentencing, Brailey's defense argued that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which they claimed led to impaired judgment and an increased sex drive, creating an "irresistible impulse." However, Justice Elizabeth Ryan stated that Brailey was aware her actions were wrong and persisted with them.

The judge emphasized that Brailey exploited her position as a teacher, abusing the trust of her young students. "Offences like this cause immense harm to the trust that must exist between families and the education system," Justice Ryan said, concluding that imprisonment was the only appropriate penalty.

Brailey received a nine-month sentence for the offense involving the 17-year-old and a one-year sentence for the sexual touching of the 16-year-old. The sentences are to be served concurrently, resulting in an aggregate term of 15 months. She will also be placed on the child protection register for 15 years and will be eligible for parole in April 2027. Brailey has since retrained as an accountant.
