Australian Taxpayers Question Large Crew on Gold Coast Highway Project

Australians have voiced criticism on social media regarding the number of workers observed performing maintenance on a Gold Coast highway tramline. Footage shared online showed a significant crew working along the Gold Coast Highway.

The video, posted by the social media page Baltus Brothers, appeared to capture at least eight individuals in high-visibility clothing working on the tramline near the Silverton Apartments. Approximately half of the group were seen using blower devices for debris removal, while others walked alongside without machinery.

The caption accompanying the video stated, "I love paying tax," with the person recording questioning, "Can someone tell me why you need 12 blokes to whipper snipper a railway?"

The workers are understood to be contractors for GoldLinQ, the entity responsible for building and operating the light rail system in collaboration with state and federal governments and the City of Gold Coast.

Some social media commentators expressed concern over the apparent size of the crew, with one user remarking, "Good use of our tax dollars." Another added, "One worker for each blade of grass," while a third humorously suggested it was "Australian Winter Olympics curling team practice."

However, others defended the workforce size, proposing reasons such as safety protocols, with some workers potentially acting as spotters, and others engaged in different tasks like weed control or spraying. One user suggested that a larger workforce could ensure the tram lines are not out of service for extended periods, stating, "Efficiency mate. Tram lines can't be down for a long time so they double the workforce to get it done."

Another perspective offered was, "And if they let the weeds grow you'd whinge about that."

The Daily Mail has reached out to the City of Gold Coast and GoldLinQ for comment.
