Australian Supermarket Faces Price Hikes Amid Rising Logistics Costs
Woolworths' logistics arm, Primary Connect, has increased its fuel levy surcharge, potentially leading to higher grocery prices for consumers.
Customers in Australia may soon face increased grocery prices as Woolworths' primary supply chain arm, Primary Connect, implements higher fuel levy surcharges. The increases are attributed to escalating logistic costs, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East that has disrupted oil supply routes and driven up fuel prices.
Primary Connect, which handles the transportation of goods for Woolworths and other major brands like Sanitarium, PepsiCo, Ingham's, and Arnott's, has raised its fuel levy for metropolitan areas from 17.47 percent to 19.88 percent. For regional areas, the levy has jumped from 44.20 percent to 50.30 percent. These figures represent a significant increase from the pre-conflict levy of 7.28 percent in metro areas.
Experts suggest that these increased operational costs are likely to be passed on to consumers. Professor Rico Merkert of the University of Sydney noted that while higher fuel levies can contribute to inflation, freight costs are only one component of the final retail price. "Consumers would not necessarily see a direct or proportional increase at the check-out," he stated. However, Professor Ben Fahimnia, also from the University of Sydney, warned that grocery prices would likely rise as suppliers cannot indefinitely absorb these higher operational expenses.
"Someone ultimately has to pay, and, at these fuel levy rates, that will be Australian consumers at the check-out," Professor Fahimnia said. Australia's inflation rate has remained high, partly due to elevated fuel costs. In August, fuel prices rose by 14.8 percent, following a 7.5 percent increase in July.
The Reserve Bank of Australia recently raised interest rates to combat inflation and is expected to consider further increases. Reserve Bank governor Michele Bullock has indicated that businesses are preparing to pass on higher fuel costs if the situation persists. "The longer it lasts, if businesses were thinking, 'Oh, look, it'll come off, I won't pass on costs,' the longer it goes, the more likely it is that businesses will just try to pass through the cost increases," Bullock stated.
Major supermarket chain Woolworths utilizes Primary Connect for transporting goods from suppliers to its distribution centers and stores. The company also serves other significant food and beverage manufacturers, meaning the ripple effect of increased logistics costs could extend across a wide range of products on Australian shelves.
