Australian Rugby Star Cleary Leaves Hospital After Multiple Surgeries

Penrith Panthers star Nathan Cleary was discharged from a Sydney hospital on Sunday afternoon, shortly before the National Rugby League (NRL) grand final. Cleary's father, Panthers coach Ivan Cleary, assisted the Dally M Medal winner into a car outside the facility. The halfback had undergone emergency surgery on September 27 for a compound fracture and dislocation of his lower left leg and ankle, sustained during a tackle. Following that initial procedure, he underwent further operations for a pre-existing fracture in his right foot.

Cleary had shared a photo from the hospital on Saturday, showing both his legs bandaged. Despite his injuries, he was able to witness the grand final, which saw the Panthers compete. Last Wednesday, Cleary received his first Dally M Medal, the NRL's highest individual honor, while recovering at his parents' home. He was virtually present at the ceremony, which was held at The Cutaway in Barangaroo, Sydney Harbour.

"I'd like to thank my parents and my family," Cleary stated during his acceptance speech. "They've done everything for me. They've sacrificed so much and put so much time and effort into me growing up. This whole year I've actually been living at home with them because my house is getting fixed, so they've looked after me well this year, and I can't thank them enough."

He also expressed gratitude to his partner for her support during their long-distance relationship. Panthers Group CEO Andrew Hill indicated that Cleary's recovery could impact the start of his 2027 season. Hill reported that the surgeon was pleased with the outcome of the operations. "Everything going to plan, round one to round four we are expecting him to be back," Hill said, referencing an estimated return to play for the beginning of the 2027 season.
