Former Australian reality television contestant Angelique Nguyen has drawn criticism after posting two videos on Instagram that feature her asking strangers to describe Black people with a single word. Nguyen, who appeared on the 2022 season of Beauty and the Geek, shared the clips on Thursday and Friday.
In the videos, Nguyen can be seen conducting street interviews, posing the question: "What's one word you would use to describe black people?" The content has been met with negative reactions in the comments section of her posts, with many labeling the videos as "weird" and questioning the nature of the inquiry. One user commented, "Why would you even ask a question like that?"
Nguyen, 25, who previously described herself as an "alien" and a "rainbow gem" on the show, has not publicly responded to the criticism beyond reacting to a comment with laughing emojis. One commenter used the word "gorilla" in response to Nguyen's question, to which she responded with laughter.
Other reactions from social media users included "This is so odd," "This is just weird," and "Ew." Another user questioned the premise of the question, asking, "How r black ppl any different to any other person? Why are we asking this question?"
Nguyen was partnered with Samuel Mitchell on Beauty and the Geek in 2022, and the pair reportedly formed a connection on the show. However, they no longer follow each other on social media.
