Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese experienced an awkward moment on Thursday when an escalator he was using malfunctioned, causing him to stumble and utter a curse word before a planned address. The incident occurred as Albanese was riding the escalator down to Labor's fiftieth national conference in Adelaide.
As the escalator suddenly halted, Albanese nearly fell, grasping both handrails for stability. He was heard to say, "f***" before looking back at his entourage with apparent frustration. He then continued down the stationary stairs to deliver his speech.
The unexpected stop and Albanese's reaction drew immediate attention and speculation on social media, with some users suggesting the escalator may have been deliberately stopped.
The incident drew comparisons to a past event involving U.S. President Donald Trump, who fell on an escalator at United Nations headquarters in September of the previous year. Following that incident, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt posted on X that if the escalator was intentionally stopped, the responsible parties should be fired and investigated. The UN had stated at the time that a safety mechanism may have been triggered by Trump's videographer.
It remains unclear what caused the escalator malfunction in Adelaide.
