Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is currently on leave, a decision confirmed by acting Prime Minister Richard Marles. Marles stated that Albanese "probably deserves one after a long period of work" and indicated the Prime Minister is in Australia, though he declined to provide further details about his location.
The leave comes weeks after Albanese publicly stated he had not taken a single day off all year. Speaking to ABC on July 16, the Prime Minister described his schedule as non-stop and expressed frustration when questioned about potentially breaking a promise to attend the Garma Festival. He explained that he had informed organizers in advance that he would be on leave during the festival dates.
During that July interview, Albanese also mentioned he was dealing with the flu but continued his demanding schedule. He said, "My diary is full, and it's been a fully engaged time."
Both leaders, Albanese and Opposition Leader Angus Taylor, are taking advantage of the parliamentary winter recess. Taylor has also stepped away, with Deputy Liberal Leader Jane Hume acting in his place. Both are expected to return before Parliament resumes next Tuesday for the spring sitting period.
