Federal Member of Parliament Helen Haines is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office in regional Victoria. The alleged assailant, identified as Brendan Nugent, 43, is in police custody. Detectives are expected to interview Nugent, who has a history of local activism.

Sources indicate that Haines had previously followed a social media account linked to Nugent. This account, which describes itself as a 'plant person' and 'pro-Gaza,' had interacted with Haines' account several years ago, complimenting her stance on climate change.

The social media profile also featured posts critical of Israel's actions in Gaza and expressed opposition to US support for the country. One post criticized Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong, referring to them as 'US lap dogs.' The account also shared content related to environmental issues, including forestry and climate change, and touched on conspiracy theories.

A photograph of a Toyota LandCruiser posted on the account in 2018 shows a vehicle with the same number plate as the one allegedly used in the attack. Police and counter-terrorism authorities are reportedly examining Nugent's online activity as part of their investigation. The incident has drawn attention to the attacker's publicly expressed political and social views, as well as the prior connection with the victim through social media.
