Australian PM Admits Error on Golf Club Grant Details

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has acknowledged that his previous statements regarding the purpose of a $6 million federal grant to Marrickville Golf Club were incorrect. Albanese had previously told Parliament that the funding was intended for an environmental project to prevent raw sewage from entering the Cooks River during floods.

During a Senate Estimates hearing on Monday, Infrastructure Department officials indicated that addressing sewerage problems at the golf club was not part of the grant agreement. Responding to questions in Parliament on Tuesday, Albanese stated, "That was not correct. The state government [has] moved in and [is] funding the project."

The Prime Minister explained that the New South Wales government has committed separate funding to address sewerage infrastructure at the club, noting that the state government is responsible for water and sewerage services. He added that the federal grant is designated for other upgrades.

The project's scope, according to Albanese, is expected to include clubhouse renovations, stormwater harvesting infrastructure, a new toilet facility, and landscaping. He also mentioned that the golf club, located in his inner-Sydney electorate, has a long history with its last major remodel occurring in 1947. Albanese holds an honorary social membership at the club and has consistently denied any involvement in securing the funding, stating that another minister approved the grant.

Some government figures have described the initial statements as an honest misunderstanding, with Assistant Minister for Regional Development Anthony Chisholm suggesting that the scope of such projects can evolve. The Senate Estimates hearing also revealed that the department had not sought clarification from the Infrastructure Minister's office regarding the distinction between stormwater and sewerage works, despite public misstatements by Albanese and other Labor figures.
