Australian MP Suffers Severe Injuries in Alleged Attack by Activist
Independent politician Helen Haines lost a leg following an incident outside her office, with a suspect charged in connection with the attack.
Independent federal politician Helen Haines has lost a leg and remains in critical condition following an alleged deliberate attack outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria, on Monday. Brendan Nugent, 43, an activist described as anti-Israel, has been charged with intentionally causing serious injury and causing harm to a federal official.
According to reports, Nugent allegedly drove a white Toyota Land Cruiser into Haines multiple times as she was retrieving belongings from the boot of her car. Emergency services amputated one of Haines's legs, and surgeons are working to save her other leg due to the severity of her injuries. Haines, 65, was initially taken to a hospital in Wangaratta before being airlifted to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.
Witnesses reported that the suspect's vehicle initially passed Haines before turning around and accelerating into her. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke stated that the driver allegedly reversed and struck Haines a second time, pinning her against her car. A bystander, Ricky Jefferies, a local barber, reportedly intervened, pulling Nugent from the vehicle and restraining him until police arrived. Jefferies also found a knife in Nugent's possession.
Nugent's family has released a statement expressing devastation and offering their full cooperation with the investigation. His parents have been friends with Haines for over 20 years, and a social media post from April 2025 showed Haines with Nugent's stepmother. "What happened to her yesterday is devastating and unfathomable," the family said, thanking the local community and police for their assistance.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised Jefferies as a hero for his intervention, stating it may have prevented further harm. "It's a reminder that at the worst of times, we see the best of the Australian character," Albanese commented.
The incident has prompted condemnation from politicians across the political spectrum and has raised concerns about rising political violence in Australia. Data indicates a significant increase in threats against parliamentarians in recent years. Mike Burgess, head of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, has previously warned that politically motivated violence is a top security concern.
Politicians have urged for a de-escalation of heated political debates while expressing hope that Australia's culture of accessible politicians will not be altered by such events. Haines, a former nurse and midwife, was first elected in 2019 and has been a strong advocate for rural issues, particularly healthcare, and played a role in establishing the National Anti-Corruption Commission.
