Dan Repacholi, the Labor Member for Hunter, has drawn significant backlash after posting a photograph on social media that depicts him seemingly urinating outdoors. The image, shared with a message about men's health, was met with strong disapproval from many followers.
Repacholi, who was appointed as the Special Envoy for Men's Health in May, explained that the post was intended to highlight health issues. He stated that while driving, with no restroom available, he felt compelled to relieve himself. He then pivoted to discuss how urine can be an indicator of health, particularly for men.
"We've all been there. Long drive, no servo in sight, and suddenly your bladder is running the show," Repacholi wrote in the post. He urged his male followers to be aware of potential health concerns, such as prostate issues, noting that changes in urinary habits like increased frequency, nighttime urination, weaker flow, pain, or blood could signal a need to consult a general practitioner. He advised drinking sufficient water, urinating when needed, and choosing appropriate locations.
Despite Repacholi's stated intentions of promoting men's health awareness, the graphic nature of the photograph prompted criticism. Some commenters described the image as repulsive and inappropriate for a public official, questioning the message it sends to younger generations and expressing disappointment. Others voiced concerns about gender equity, suggesting that women face greater challenges in managing such situations publicly.
However, the post also garnered support from some individuals who appreciated the effort to raise awareness for men's health issues. One follower shared their personal experience with prostate cancer screening, thanking Repacholi for his advocacy. Another commenter made a lighthearted remark about controlling "weeds."
