Australian MP Helen Haines Undergoing Emergency Surgery After Targeted Attack
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirms the independent lawmaker is in critical condition following a vehicle incident outside her office.
Federal independent MP for Indi Helen Haines is in critical condition and has undergone emergency surgery after being struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria.
The 65-year-old mother-of-three was retrieving belongings from her car on Monday afternoon when she was hit by a white Toyota Landcruiser. Witnesses reported the driver made a U-turn and appeared to aim the vehicle at Haines. She was pinned by the four-wheel-drive and sustained severe lower body injuries.
She was initially treated at a local hospital before being airlifted to Melbourne for further treatment, with concerns she may lose both legs.
A 43-year-old man from Tarrawingee was arrested at the scene. As of Tuesday morning, no charges had been laid.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese provided an update on Haines' condition Tuesday morning, stating she underwent surgery overnight and remains in critical condition. "All of Australians’ thoughts are with the family, with her many friends, with her community," Albanese said. "Helen Haines is someone of integrity. She’s greatly admired right across the political spectrum. She’s someone who’s characterised by her kindness, her diligence, her intelligence, someone who is so proud of representing that beautiful part of Victoria."
