Australian MP Helen Haines Suffers Life-Altering Injuries in Alleged Targeted Attack

Independent MP Helen Haines sustained severe injuries, including the amputation of one leg, after being struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, northern Victoria, on Monday afternoon. Police have charged Brendan Nugent, 43, of Tarrawingee, with dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. He is scheduled to appear in Wangaratta Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

Victoria Police stated that the incident is believed to have been targeted. The 65-year-old MP underwent emergency surgery at The Alfred hospital in Melbourne. She remains in critical but stable condition.

Authorities responded to the incident swiftly, with a highway patrol unit arriving at the scene within eight seconds of receiving a call. Police conducted a search of a property on Great Alpine Road in Tarrawingee on Tuesday. "At this stage, it appears this is an isolated incident, and there are currently no other known threats connected to this matter," police said in a statement.

Nugent was reportedly apprehended by a bystander driving the Toyota LandCruiser before police arrived. Witnesses described the vehicle making a U-turn, striking Haines, reversing, and striking her again.

Dr. Haines' family has been at her bedside at the hospital. In a joint statement, Nugent's father, Rod Nugent, and his partner, Christine Cunningham, expressed their devastation and unfathomable grief, noting that Dr. Haines had been their friend for over 20 years. They extended their gratitude to the community and police for their assistance and pledged to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.

Counter-terrorism authorities are investigating the incident. Acting Superintendent Ashley Mason of Victoria Police indicated that there was no prior intelligence suggesting Nugent was on authorities' radar. AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett also stated it appeared to be a standalone incident without ongoing danger.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke, along with Victorian Premier Ben Carroll, have been briefed by federal and Victorian police. The AFP has reported an increase in threats against parliamentarians and public officials in recent years and is enhancing security briefings for federal MPs. A task force established in October 2025 to address high-impact, politically motivated violence has led to 41 charges against individuals for threatening politicians and public officials.
