Australian MP Helen Haines Injured in Apparent Deliberate Attack
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese calls the incident a "deliberate act" as counter-terrorism police investigate.
Australian Independent MP Helen Haines has been hospitalized with critical injuries after being struck by a car in what Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described as a "deliberate act." The incident occurred Monday afternoon near an office in Wangaratta, a city in northeastern Victoria.
Counter-terrorism police are involved in the investigation. Authorities reported that Haines was hit by a white Toyota Landcruiser driven by a 43-year-old man from Tarrawingee. The suspect was apprehended at the scene by a bystander before being taken into police custody. A knife was also recovered from the vehicle. Victoria Police stated that it is currently unknown whether the suspect and Haines knew each other, and the investigation is ongoing.
Haines, 65, represents the federal seat of Indi in Victoria. She was first elected to the Australian House of Representatives in 2019 and re-elected in subsequent elections. Prior to her political career, she worked as a nurse and midwife, eventually becoming the matron of the Chiltern Bush Nursing Hospital. She holds a master's degree in public health and a PhD in Medical Science.
The incident took place outside her electorate office on Murphy Street in Wangaratta at approximately 3:35 p.m. local time.
Prime Minister Albanese expressed deep concern, stating, "My concern at this point in time is for one, one of my colleagues." He noted a perceived rise in adversarial behavior and a decline in constructive discourse within Australian politics. Data from the Home Affairs Minister indicated an increase in reports of harassment and threatening behavior towards lawmakers in the 2025-26 financial year, compared to the previous year.
Albanese described Haines as "incredibly hard-working," "fiercely intelligent," and "a thoroughly decent human being full of integrity and respected right across the Parliament." He added that the attack would be an "incredible shock" to her community. Foreign Minister Penny Wong called the incident a "shocking and deeply disturbing attack," while Premier of Victoria Ben Carroll expressed he was "deeply appalled." Opposition leader Angus Taylor conveyed his "deep sadness and distress," remarking, "This is a shocking day for our nation. No-one should be targeted in this way."
