Australian MP Helen Haines in Critical Condition After Alleged Deliberate Attack; Suspect's Motive Under Investigation
Independent MP Helen Haines has lost a leg and remains in critical condition following a vehicle attack outside her electorate office in Wangaratta.
Australian politician Helen Haines is in critical condition after being struck multiple times by a vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria. The independent MP for Indi underwent emergency surgery in Melbourne and has lost a leg.
Brendan Nugent, 43, was arrested at the scene on Monday afternoon. Authorities have not yet laid charges as counterterrorism units investigate the incident. Police and anti-terror authorities are examining Nugent's social media activity for potential motives. A social media account appearing to belong to Nugent contains posts about the Israel-Gaza war and criticisms of Australian politicians.
Cody Lepoidevin, an employee at a local roadhouse who assisted Haines, described the alleged driver's reaction immediately after the incident. Lepoidevin stated that Nugent seemed more concerned about his personal belongings in his car than the attack itself. "He was more worried about his personal belongings in his car," Lepoidevin told reporters.
Witnesses reported that the driver of a Toyota LandCruiser made a U-turn to drive into Haines, pinning her against a vehicle, and then reversed and struck her a second time. Haines, a mother of three and grandmother, suffered severe lower-body injuries.
Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett confirmed that the attack is being treated as an isolated incident with no known ongoing threats. However, she noted that potential charges could include offenses related to harming a Commonwealth public official, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment.
Lepoidevin and another local, Ricky Jefferies, were among the first to render aid to Haines and assisted in detaining Nugent until police arrived. Lepoidevin described Nugent as "very erratic and irrational in his thoughts."
