Australian MP Helen Haines Hospitalized After Alleged Deliberate Attack

Federal Member for Indi Helen Haines is in hospital after being deliberately struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta on Monday afternoon. The 65-year-old independent MP sustained severe lower body injuries and underwent emergency surgery overnight in Melbourne.

Haines was retrieving belongings from the boot of her car when she was allegedly struck multiple times by a white 1997 Toyota LandCruiser. Witnesses reported that the driver made a U-turn before appearing to direct the vehicle towards the MP. She was pinned by the four-wheel-drive.

Brendan Nugent, 43, from near Wangaratta, was arrested at the scene. No charges have been laid.

Hours before the incident, Haines shared a post on social media about the significance of the Australian flag and national pride. "Our national flags are powerful symbols of who we are as Australians - our history, our values and the country we're proud to call home," she wrote. "I hope these flags inspire pride in our country and conversations about what it means to be Australian."

Haines has served as the federal MP for Indi since 2019 and is known for her advocacy on issues including gambling reform, mental health, welfare payments, and early childhood education. She has also supported reforms in aged care and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Haines is also recognized for her commitment to political integrity and played a significant role in the establishment of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC). A statement released by her office about an hour before the alleged attack welcomed the appointment of a new NACC commissioner and deputy.

Political leaders across the spectrum have expressed their support for Haines. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described her as "someone of integrity" and "a beacon of light for that community." He noted a concerning rise in threats against politicians and called for a less divisive political discourse.
