Australian MP Helen Haines Critically Injured in Alleged Vehicle Attack; Suspect Identified

Federal MP Helen Haines is in critical condition after being struck multiple times by a vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta on Monday afternoon. The 65-year-old independent MP for Indi underwent emergency surgery in Melbourne overnight, with fears she could lose a leg.

Brendan Nugent, 43, was arrested at the scene and taken into custody. Counter-terrorism authorities are investigating the incident, though no charges had been laid as of Tuesday morning. Social media accounts linked to Nugent reportedly contain posts critical of Israel's actions in Gaza and express views on environmental issues.

Witnesses described the driver making a U-turn into the car park before allegedly ramming Haines, then reversing to strike her again. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke stated that witnesses reported the driver ramming Haines against a vehicle and then reversing to hit her a second time.

Haines, a mother-of-three and grandmother, was retrieving belongings from her car boot when the incident occurred. She was pinned by the four-wheel-drive and suffered severe lower-body injuries before being airlifted to Melbourne.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised Ricky Jefferies, a local barber shop owner, who intervened by pulling Nugent from the vehicle and restraining him until police arrived. Jefferies also found and kicked away a flick knife from the suspect's pocket. Albanese called Jefferies a hero, suggesting his actions may have prevented further injuries, and noted a concerning rise in threats against politicians.

Haines, who served as a nurse, midwife, and health researcher before entering politics, is known for her advocacy on rural issues, healthcare, and establishing the National Anti-Corruption Commission. She has also been vocal on foreign policy matters, including the conflict in Gaza.

Haines' family released a statement expressing gratitude for the assistance of bystanders and health workers, and requested privacy.

The incident has led to discussions about security for politicians, with Victorian Premier Ben Carroll suggesting security measures might be heightened for the upcoming state election.
