Australian MP Helen Haines Critically Injured After Being Struck by Vehicle

Federal MP Helen Haines is in critical condition after being struck multiple times by a vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta on Monday afternoon. The 65-year-old independent member for Indi was retrieving items from her car boot when she was hit by a white 1997 Toyota LandCruiser. Witnesses reported that the driver allegedly made a U-turn before directing the vehicle towards Haines. She was pinned by the four-wheel-drive and sustained severe lower body injuries, requiring airlift to Melbourne for emergency surgery.

A 43-year-old man, Brendan Nugent from near Wangaratta, was arrested at the scene, but no charges have yet been laid. The motive for the attack remains unclear.

This incident occurred less than 24 hours after Haines shared a message on social media about her pride in Australia and the significance of the national flag. "Our national flags are powerful symbols of who we are as Australians - our history, our values and the country we're proud to call home," she stated, sharing photos of herself presenting flags to local schools. "I hope these flags inspire pride in our country and conversations about what it means to be Australian."

Haines, who has served as the federal MP for Indi since 2019, has been a prominent advocate for gambling reform, mental health support, increased welfare payments, and universal access to early childhood education. Her background as a midwife and nurse informs her advocacy for reforms in aged care and the NDIS. She is respected across the political spectrum for her commitment to integrity in politics and was a key figure in establishing the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC).

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed deep concern over the attack, describing Haines as "someone of integrity" and "a beacon of light" for her community. He noted a concerning rise in threats against politicians, stating, "It's important in a democracy that people are allowed to have disagreements. But that doesn't mean that you have to draw into question people's motivations or their patriotism or who they are." Albanese suggested that "political discourse [has] go[ne] in the wrong direction in recent times."

Fellow independent MP Allegra Spender lauded Haines as "the best of us," highlighting her compassionate and rigorous approach to parliamentary issues. "Whether you agree with her or you don't on issues, you would be proud to see how she approaches issues in the parliament; with compassion, with rigour, everything that you would want from a politician," Spender said.
