Australian MP Critically Injured in Suspected Deliberate Attack
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese suggests the incident involving MP Helen Haines was not accidental.
Australian independent MP Helen Haines is in critical condition in hospital after being struck by a car in what Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described as a potential deliberate attack. The 65-year-old politician was hit outside her constituency office in Wangaratta, Victoria, on Monday afternoon.
A 43-year-old man was detained at the scene by a passerby, and police found a knife in the vehicle. Authorities are investigating the incident as potentially intentional but stated there is no ongoing threat to the community. A witness told Australian broadcaster ABC they heard a bang and saw a woman pinned between two cars.
Haines was initially taken to a local hospital before being airlifted to a hospital in Melbourne. Prime Minister Albanese commented that while the motive is unclear, the political climate in Australia has been intensifying. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke noted that reports of threatening or harassing behavior towards politicians have increased, rising from 951 to 1,067 in the past year.
Haines, an anti-corruption campaigner elected in 2019, has been influential in advocating for political integrity, including proposing legislation for a national anti-corruption watchdog. She has collaborated with other independent MPs on issues such as climate action and gender equality.
Political leaders from across the spectrum have expressed shock and concern. Opposition leader Angus Taylor called the attack "appalling," while Greens leader Senator David Shoebridge described Haines as an "extraordinary human being." Senator Pauline Hanson stated that violence against elected representatives is "never acceptable."
An Australian parliamentary report last year indicated a significant increase in threats and physical attacks against politicians over the past decade. The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation has also warned of a growing risk of politically motivated violence.
