Australian Man's Barefoot Supermarket Habit Sparks Online Debate
An Australian man's decision to shop barefoot has drawn criticism from his American girlfriend and thousands of online commenters.
An Australian man has ignited a debate after being seen shopping barefoot in a supermarket, a habit he claims is normal and healthy, much to the dismay of his American girlfriend.
Nigel, an event organizer from Brisbane, was appearing on the reality television show '90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way' when he exited his car without shoes to go to the grocery store. His girlfriend, Andi, a musician from Nashville, expressed her immediate discomfort.
'Oh my god, I don't want to get somebody else's foot fungus,' Andi stated. Nigel dismissed her concerns, responding, 'There's no foot fungus, it's not like that... Let the dogs breathe, baby.' He explained that Australians often go barefoot because they believe it is healthy and helps them stay 'earthed to the planet.'
Andi noted that she had seen only a few barefoot shoppers during a previous visit to Australia, questioning its widespread normalcy. "In America, no shirt, no shoes, no service," she recalled. Despite her reservations, she decided to try the experience, describing it as "so weird" and pointing out that other shoppers appeared to give her strange looks. She voiced concerns about potential hazards like spilled liquids or broken glass on the floor.
Nigel remained unfazed, telling Andi to "Relax." He insisted that it was "pretty normal to go to a shopping centre barefoot in Australia, it's not frowned upon."
However, the incident has prompted a strong reaction from many online, with numerous Australians asserting that going barefoot in public places like supermarkets is not common or acceptable behavior outside of beachside locations. Comments on social media described the habit as "disgusting" and "not normal."
Andi and Nigel's relationship, as depicted on the show, appears to have encountered further difficulties, with Andi reportedly returning to the U.S. after they decided against a non-monogamous relationship.
