Patrick Stevenson, a 20-year-old man from the Gold Coast, is currently detained in Syria and faces the death penalty for the alleged murder of another Australian national. Stevenson has been held for seven months in connection with the December shooting death of Abdullah Glen Charles Burgess.
In Syria, premeditated murder is punishable by death. However, the country's legal system allows for a potential reprieve from execution if the victim's widow offers forgiveness. This forgiveness can be granted in exchange for a blood-money payment.
Stevenson reportedly traveled to Syria in 2025, having become radicalized while living in Australia. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the Australian federal government is providing assistance to both families involved in the case. He acknowledged that legal processes would proceed overseas and that this is appropriate. The government has offered support to the family of the deceased and to the family of the accused.
Australia's lack of a diplomatic presence in Syria has limited the government's ability to provide consular support. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been contacted for comment.
