Australian Idol Star Courtney Murphy Cancels Concert Amid Battle with Bowel Cancer
The Murphy Brothers postpone a November show due to the singer's ongoing chemotherapy treatments.
The Murphy Brothers, a rock band featuring former Australian Idol contestant Courtney Murphy, have cancelled an upcoming concert scheduled for November 15 in Western Australia. The decision comes as Murphy, 46, continues his battle with stage four bowel cancer and undergoes fortnightly chemotherapy.
A statement released by the band indicated that the rescheduled show would have fallen on the same week as Murphy's treatment, leaving him without the necessary energy to perform. "Because of this, he won't have the energy to get through the show, and we wouldn't dream of doing it without him," the band stated on Instagram. "We know you'll be disappointed, but we're confident you'll understand his health comes first."
Murphy, who gained fame on Australian Idol in 2004, revealed his late-stage bowel cancer diagnosis in April 2024. Last year, he expressed a realistic outlook on his prognosis, telling PerthNow that he did not believe he would "beat" the disease but was focused on remaining strong for as long as possible. He has channeled this period into creating music with his brothers, Chris and Kieran.
The band's fundraising page, initially set up by his brothers, described the situation as a fight for Murphy's life, noting his inability to work as a self-employed musician, leaving his wife and three young children to face significant challenges.
Despite the health battle, Murphy has continued to perform and record new music with his brothers. His brother Chris previously told Perth Now that Courtney was "really proud" of the latest album and delivered a "phenomenal performance."
The news of Courtney's cancer followed the Murphy family's loss of their father to brain cancer in 2024.
