Australian Grandmother Fights for Life in Bali After Fall and Medication Reaction
A freak accident in a Bali restaurant has left an Australian grandmother in critical condition, battling severe fractures and a dangerous reaction to pain medication, prompting a family fundraising effort.
An Australian grandmother is in a critical condition in a Bali hospital after a fall in a restaurant bathroom led to severe leg fractures and a subsequent adverse reaction to pain medication.
Estelle Ravenscroft, 79, from Busselton in Western Australia, was on her annual holiday with her husband when she slipped and fell into an open stairwell at a restaurant. The fall resulted in six severe fractures across both of her upper legs. Doctors initially administered an opioid injection to manage her pain, but she experienced a severe reaction that caused her vital signs to plummet and led to convulsions.
Due to the adverse reaction to the medication, her medical team had to manually realign her leg bones without the use of anesthetic before placing them into traction. Mrs. Ravenscroft then underwent a nine-hour surgery. The procedure was complicated because the opioids had affected her heart, preventing a full general anesthetic. She has since required two blood transfusions due to blood loss.
Her condition has continued to be a concern, with swelling in her mouth and throat further complicating her recovery. She remains in the intensive care unit, unable to communicate, with her husband by her side. The family is also concerned about the eventual logistics and cost of her transfer back to Australia for specialized hospital treatment and rehabilitation.
The couple did not have travel insurance, a fact that has compounded their distress, especially given their previous unproblematic trips to Bali. To help cover the monumental costs of her surgery and ongoing medical care, her daughter has launched a GoFundMe campaign. Family members have expressed gratitude for any donations received.
