Australian Couple Purchases Japanese Home for $16,000

Australian couple Kate and Andrew Buchan have purchased a home in Japan for approximately $16,000, fulfilling a long-held dream. The couple, both 40, have been annual visitors to Japan for its winter snow seasons and met there in 2013.

Their newly acquired property is described as a 40-year-old home situated on an 800-square-meter plot of land. The house features two bedrooms, with one located downstairs and a traditional tatami room upstairs. The previous owners had left the property untouched, with personal belongings still inside when the Buchans took ownership. The couple plans to divide their time between their new Japanese holiday home and their home in Australia, spending several months each year in Japan during the winter.

The decision to purchase the property was driven by a desire for a stable place to stay during their frequent trips. They view the acquisition as a long-term lifestyle choice, allowing them to share their passion for Japan, particularly its snowboarding opportunities, with their two children. The Buchans reside in Torquay, a coastal town approximately 100 kilometers from Melbourne, Australia.
