Australian Casting Director Linked to Cate Blanchett Faces Drink Driving Charge
Toni Higginbotham, who claims to have discovered the Oscar-winning actress, has been charged with mid-range alcohol offense in Sydney.
An Australian casting director, Toni Higginbotham, who states she helped launch the career of Cate Blanchett, is facing a charge of mid-range drink driving. Higginbotham, based in Sydney, has been charged after allegedly returning a reading of 0.090 in the city's eastern suburbs.
According to police, Higginbotham was stopped by officers on New South Head Road at Bellevue Hill on August 1. The incident marks her first alleged offense. She was not present in Waverley Court for the mention of her case, with her lawyer representing her.
The matter has been adjourned until October 6, when Higginbotham is expected to enter a plea. She has accumulated over three decades of experience in the industry, most recently working on the 2026 film "Cruel Hands."
Blanchett, who starred in the 1994 ABC series "Heartland" in a role cast by Higginbotham, has previously indicated intentions to retire from acting. In an interview with Radio Times, the Oscar-winning actress stated she was serious about stepping away from her career to pursue other life interests, though she did not provide a specific timeframe.
This is not the first time Blanchett has spoken about potentially leaving acting. In 2023, she reportedly told Vanity Fair that she had often contemplated stepping away from her profession despite international acclaim.
