Australian Ambulance Volunteer Stood Down Amidst Community Outcry
A decorated volunteer faces dismissal over multiple alleged incidents, including a missed vegan meal, prompting a town-wide protest.
A decorated Australian ambulance volunteer, Robert Berlin, has been stood down from his role after nearly five decades of service, sparking outrage in the Pinnaroo community. Berlin, 70, who captained the local South Australian Ambulance Service (SAAS) unit, was reportedly ordered to surrender his uniform and station keys within 24 hours.
The allegations circulating on social media, and fueling community anger, include claims that Berlin failed to provide a vegan meal option for a visiting staff member. Other reported incidents involve frightening staff by knocking loudly on the station's roller door, allegedly speaking aggressively to another emergency team during a critical patient incident, and inappropriate use of SAAS facilities.
Berlin, who received the Ambulance Service Medal in the 2019 Australia Day Honours for his extensive service, managed a team of 12 volunteers who provided 24/7 ambulance coverage to Pinnaroo and surrounding areas. His alleged misconduct has led to the entire SAAS volunteer crew at Pinnaroo walking off the job in protest.
To maintain services, SAAS has deployed volunteers from a neighboring town and brought in paid staff from metropolitan Adelaide. Local leaders, including Southern Mallee Mayor Ron Valentine, have demanded an urgent and independent investigation into Berlin's dismissal, emphasizing his integrity and standing within the community. "The way it has been handled is completely unjust and an overreach of massive proportions," Valentine stated.
Pinnaroo SAAS volunteers have vowed to return to their duties only after an external investigation is launched. Local MPs Jason Virgo and Tony Pasin have also called for an independent review to ensure fairness.
SAAS acknowledged awareness of public concerns regarding ambulance services in Pinnaroo. In a statement, the service said that many online comments contain inaccurate information and do not reflect the facts. SAAS stated its commitment to fairly investigating all allegations in accordance with its policies to ensure a safe environment for staff and volunteers. The service also reassured the community of its dedication to providing ongoing ambulance services in Pinnaroo and has implemented arrangements, including an additional volunteer from outside the area, to support local coverage during the period of reduced volunteer availability.
