Australian Actress Magda Szubanski Faces 'Incurable Relapse' in Cancer Battle

Magda Szubanski, the Australian actress known for her role in "Babe," has shared a heartbreaking update on her ongoing battle with Mantle Cell Lymphoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. In a recent interview, Szubanski revealed she is facing an "incurable relapse" and may have only approximately eight years left to live.

"So, it's almost sure that it will come back. It's a question of 'when' and then 'how bad'," the 65-year-old comedian told 60 Minutes host Tracy Grimshaw. She explained that the median survival rate for her condition is eight and a half years, acknowledging that her own time could be less.

Szubanski described her current state as living with the "sword of Damocles over her head," emphasizing a profound awareness of mortality. She recounted the intense experience of chemotherapy, likening it to a "multi-car pile-up," but affirmed that it was "doable." Despite the challenges, she noted that her previous treatment results had been positive, though she understands this can change.

The actress first discovered her illness after a period of feeling unwell and experiencing disturbing nightmares. "I knew something was wrong. I just felt so unwell," she stated, recalling dreams that told her, "you're dying, you're dying."

This revelation follows an earlier announcement in February that her cancer had gone into remission. At the time, Szubanski expressed relief, stating, "I've completed chemo and I am now in remission. Phew!" She clarified that remission was not a cure but a hope to keep the cancer at bay for a significant period. She also extended gratitude to her supporters, attributing their love and encouragement to both emotional and physical well-being.

Szubanski has consistently praised Australia's medical system and its healthcare professionals. "There's not a day that goes by that I don't give profound thanks to the medical community... and also to the common sense of the Australian people that we see how practical and compassionate it is to have a really good medical system," she said.

She first publicly disclosed her diagnosis of Mantle Cell Lymphoma in May of the previous year, appearing with a shaved head to mark the commencement of her treatment. At that time, she described it as "one of the nasty ones, unfortunately," but expressed confidence in her support network, including friends, family, and an "incredible medical support team."
