In a stunning display of resilience, Australia secured a remarkable 42-38 victory over a significantly altered South African side, even after being reduced to 11 men during the closing stages of their Test match in Perth.
The Wallabies dominated much of the contest, showcasing vibrant attacking rugby and scoring five tries to build a commanding 25-point lead with just 16 minutes remaining. However, a chaotic nine-minute period saw Australia receive four yellow cards, leaving them severely shorthanded and allowing the Springboks to mount a furious comeback that ultimately fell short.
South Africa, who had made 13 changes after their previous match against New Zealand, still fielded a strong team. Despite this, it was the home side who impressed with their performance leading up to the late-game drama.
The match began with an exchange of penalties before Springboks hooker Johan Grobbelaar opened the scoring with a try from a maul. Australia responded quickly, with center Len Ikitau powering over for their first try. Ikitau then scored his second after a defensive error by South Africa, but the visitors soon equalized through Edwill van der Merwe's try in the corner. Australia regained the lead before halftime when fly-half Ben Donaldson finished off a sustained period of possession.
Early in the second half, with Australia leading by 10 points, South Africa made extensive changes. Nevertheless, Australia extended their advantage. Captain Harry Wilson eventually burrowed over for a try after being initially denied, and wing Max Jorgensen scored a solo effort after a South African fumble, extending the lead to 42-17.
The tide turned dramatically as Wilson was sin-binned. South Africa capitalized with a penalty try, and Ryan Lonergan soon followed Wilson to the sin bin, leaving Australia with 13 players. Although a potential try for Van der Merwe was dropped before grounding, the Springboks continued to press.
Australia's woes worsened with a fourth yellow card shown to wing Joseph-Aukuso Sua'ali'i, reducing them to 11 players. Replacement scrum-half Morne van den Berg scored to narrow the deficit to 11 points. The situation grew more extraordinary when Tom Wright intercepted a pass for what appeared to be another try, only for it to be disallowed due to a dangerous tackle by Hunter Paisami, who was subsequently shown Australia's fourth yellow card.
With significant space on the field, South Africa scored again through Ox Nche, cutting the lead to a mere four points, but time expired before they could complete the comeback.
