Australia's Busiest McDonald's Located in Remote Outback Town

Australia's busiest McDonald's restaurant is located in Alice Springs, a remote town in the Northern Territory, despite the country's major cities having significantly larger populations. This regional store has maintained the top sales position for over two years and recently set a new national monthly sales record for the fast-food chain.

The Alice Springs location serves an average of approximately 2,740 customers each day, with its busiest periods during breakfast and dinner. In July alone, the restaurant served over 85,000 customers. This volume is particularly notable given Alice Springs has a population of around 34,000 people, a stark contrast to the millions residing in cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

The town's role as a central hub for the wider Central Australia region, attracting visitors from surrounding communities and tourists, contributes to the high customer numbers. Additionally, Alice Springs offers a more limited selection of well-known chain restaurants compared to larger metropolitan areas, potentially directing more customers to McDonald's.

To manage the high volume of orders, the restaurant employs 241 people, with up to 35 staff working concurrently during peak times. The establishment is operated by licensees who relocated from Western Australia. It has become a significant local employer and provides support to more than 40 community clubs and organizations.

The popularity of the Alice Springs McDonald's offers insight into fast-food consumption patterns. While city restaurants benefit from dense populations, regional outlets often draw customers from extensive geographical areas, especially where dining options are scarce. Alice Springs serves a vast portion of Central Australia, with individuals traveling considerable distances for various services, including dining. The town is also a common stop for tourists exploring the Red Centre.

As one of the few nationally recognized fast-food chains in the area, McDonald's in Alice Springs experiences exceptionally high customer numbers relative to its local population. This distinction makes it an unexpected leader in Australian fast-food sales, outperforming outlets in much larger urban centers.
